July 2022

This is a story of process, of how, in itself, it contributes to the value of the end result.

In July 2022, I attended the defence ceremony of the master’s dissertation of a fellow architect and friend. The audience was mainly made up of family and friends. So despite the formality I felt a general sense of comfort.

Sitting to my right was a young woman who, despite not particularly liking to have a camera pointed at her, has the gift of translating her emotions in a very immediate and genuine way.

That room was known. In my head I imagined the frame with the edges of the wall and the ceiling light rushing towards the face. The light was clearly showing the face. Hypothetically… maybe, with luck, I could execute what I imagined. But this was a frame I couldn’t deliberately set up. I couldn’t get up or move significantly. I couldn’t point the camera using the monitor.

Perhaps the greatest merit lies in the fact that I tried. I placed the device on the backpack on the table, pointing the lens as best as my perception would allow. The result is still surprising today. These are records without any cutting or post-production, a mere stroke of luck. To the inherent chance of the subject’s reaction, which I do not influence in any way, is added the fact that I did not control any technical aspect with traditional certainty.

This virtue is exponentiated when the result is not a single record but a sequence. The first is the one in which the subject is more distant but nearest to the end of the frame. An initial tension is created. In the second, there is a general darkening of the subject that is combined with a slight defocusing. In the third and last register not only the composition, but also the focus and the light on the subject align themselves in the best of conditions, creating the main register, the star of the sequence.

In randomness a narrative has been created. The development of tensions anticipates and projects the last highlighted element, as if it were a Greek tragedy. The chaotic, uncontrolled, spontaneous process, based partly on the arbitrary, intensifies the value of an already very beautiful, emotional register.

This sequence was composed into a wider project of twelve records centred on the same subject entitled “Eu, Rosália”.

(Original Version)

Não me podia levantar, baixar ou mover-me significativamente.
